Japan visa requirements for Bangladeshi travellers.
Ordinary Bangladeshi passport holders need advance Japanese entry permission for the Kyoto–Tokyo holiday. Bangladesh is absent from Japan’s short-stay exemption list. Bangladesh residents use the Embassy-designated VFS submission route; an online appointment is not an issued visa. [JP01–JP03]
Facts checked on
Position and scope
Japan / জাপান; ISO JP; East Asia; capital Tokyo. Applies to short tourism without paid activity. Official authorities: Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Embassy in Dhaka. Package ST001.
Visa category and eligibility
Use the short-term tourism category. The current JAPAN eVISA residence-country list does not include Bangladesh. A Bangladeshi citizen lawfully resident in an eligible third country must check that Japanese mission’s jurisdiction and eVISA conditions separately; citizenship alone does not settle online eligibility. No ordinary-passport visa-on-arrival route is established here. [JP02–JP03]
Entry conditions and supporting evidence
Use a valid passport with space for the visa and a coherent funded itinerary. The retrieved current short-stay checklist, not an old business checklist, governs the tourism document categories below. An additional interview or document request remains possible. No universal six-month passport-validity rule, fixed minimum bank balance or insurance requirement is asserted from the sources inspected. Verify the passport’s remaining validity and blank-page condition with VFS. [JP04–JP05]
Document checklist
- Official core: Valid passport, completed application and one photograph under the current specification. [JP04]
- Official core: Flight or ship itinerary showing arrival and departure dates/numbers; itinerary in Japan with accommodation details. [JP04]
- Conditional: If self-funding: one accepted income/tax or bank/balance document to evidence travel funds. [JP04]
- Applicant-specific: Host/guarantor and relationship evidence only for the relevant sponsored or visit category; extra evidence may be requested.
- Not established: NID, employment papers and insurance are not asserted here as universal tourism requirements; follow the current personalised checklist.
Application procedure
- Open the Embassy-linked VFS Japan Bangladesh site and select the tourism category.
- Book the online appointment; prepare the current form, photograph and tourism evidence.
- Submit as instructed at VFS; pay the applicable handling charge and retain the receipt and tracking reference. Attend any additional examination requested.
- Track through the official VFS route. After collection, check identity, entries, last-entry date and permitted activities before finalising travel.
Official fees and processing
The live Dhaka Embassy page states no visa issuance fee for Bangladeshi nationals, while VFS charges separately. Japan changed its general overseas visa fees from 1 July 2026, but the MOFA notice expressly preserves nationality-dependent exemptions. Do not charge a generic yen tariff as the Bangladesh fee. Confirm the current VFS handling amount and optional charges before paying. Dhaka publishes seven working days from VFS submission to earliest issuance for a complete application; appointment waits and complex examination are additional. This is not a deadline guarantee. [JP01, JP06]
Validity stay and entry limits
A standard single-entry visa is generally usable for entry within three months of issue and is used up on entry. That entry-validity window is different from the period of stay granted at landing. Read the actual visa and landing permission; neither the package duration nor a multiple-entry request guarantees a particular stay or validity. [JP05]
Transit and multi-country travel
ST001 visits Japan; Kyoto–Tokyo rail travel does not cross another country. If a flight connection requires leaving the international area, collecting baggage through immigration or changing between Narita and Haneda, arrange valid Japanese entry authority first. Pure airside transit depends on the actual airport, operating hours and carrier; no blanket exemption is given for an unbooked connection.
Documentation errors and refusal risks
General documentation risks include inconsistent dates, unexplained funding and a purpose that does not match tourism. Use genuine evidence. MOFA warns that incomplete or incorrect eVISA submissions may be cancelled; do not pay a website that imitates the official service.
Practical preparation
Book the VFS slot before relying on a departure date. Use the current tourism checklist and keep a copy of the application. The checklist says reservations and payment for tickets and accommodation are not required at application stage; provide the requested itinerary and accommodation details without treating a paid non-refundable booking as mandatory. [JP04]
Verification limits
Outstanding checks: exact current VFS service fee, slot availability, applicant-specific passport space/validity and any additional evidence or interview. These are not promised by this chapter.
Rules may change. Reconfirm with the official authority and airline before applying and departure. A visa does not guarantee boarding or border admission.

Questions
Asked at our desk.
Is a Bangladesh passport visa-free for Japan?
No; it is absent from the short-stay exemption list.
Can a Bangladesh resident use JAPAN eVISA directly?
Bangladesh is not in the retrieved residence-country list; use the designated local route.
Does free visa issuance mean a free application?
No. VFS handling and chosen optional services are separate.
Is seven working days guaranteed?
No. It is the published earliest standard for a complete VFS submission; waiting and extra examination add time.
Must I buy non-refundable flights first?
The current checklist distinguishes itinerary information from paid reservations; payment is not required at application stage.
Does three-month visa validity mean a three-month stay?
No. Entry validity and the landing-authorised stay are different.
Is a Japanese guarantor compulsory for a self-funded holiday?
The tourism column accepts self-funding evidence; use host/guarantor requirements only when applicable.
Will a visa guarantee admission?
No. Immigration still decides the landing permission.
