How to apply

Apply online on GOV.UK up to 3 months before you travel, then give your fingerprints and photo at the UK visa application centre run by VFS Global. Your appointment confirmation shows the centre's address.

• 2 years: £506
• 5 years: £903
• 10 years: £1,128

GOV.UK says you will usually get a decision within 3 weeks of giving your fingerprints and photo.

Documents that help your application

Only a valid passport is required, but the Home Office guide suggests evidence like this. It also says hotel bookings are not useful evidence, so don't pay for them before you have the visa.

• A passport valid for your whole stay, and old passports showing your travel history
• Bank statements that show where your money comes from
• A letter from your employer with your role, salary and how long you have worked there
• Business registration or invoices if you are self-employed
• Evidence from your sponsor if someone else is paying for the trip
• Certified English translations of documents not in English
