Sajek Valley tips: clouds, Konglak sunrise, jeeps and cottages
When to see Sajek's clouds, how to catch sunrise at Konglak, why to book early, and what to know about the jeep escort, network, cash and cold nights.

Sajek is the place people mean when they talk about waking up above the clouds. The village sits along a ridge in the far north of Rangamati district, reached by road through Khagrachari, and on a good morning the valleys below fill with white mist while the hills poke through like islands. It is beautiful, but it is also remote, and a little planning makes the difference between a magical trip and a frustrating one.
When to go for the clouds
If clouds are what you are after, go in the rainy season or the months just after it. That is when the valleys fill most often in the early morning. The trade-off is rain, slippery roads and the occasional landslide on the way up.
Late autumn and winter bring clearer skies and long views across the hills, with fewer clouds below you but crisp, bright sunrises. Nights get properly cold in winter, colder than most people from Dhaka expect. The hottest dry months are the least rewarding for views.
The jeep ride and the escort schedule
Most travellers take an overnight bus from Dhaka to Khagrachari, then hire a chander gari, the open-backed jeeps that carry groups up the hill road. Sharing one with your group keeps the cost down and the ride is half the fun, with the road curving through hills and villages.
Vehicles to Sajek usually travel in convoy with an army escort from Baghaihat at set times of day, typically once in the morning and once in the afternoon. If you miss your slot, you wait for the next one, so leave Khagrachari in good time. The schedule can change, and access to the hill tracts is sometimes restricted at short notice. Softway Travels checks the current rules and timings when you book. Our post on reaching Sajek via Khagrachari covers the sights along the way.
Book your cottage early
Sajek has a limited number of resorts and cottages, and they fill fast. Thursday and Friday nights, long weekends, Eid holidays and the cloud season are busiest of all, and people who turn up without a booking can end up with a poor room or none. Book your stay before anything else, and ask a few questions first:
- Does the room face the valley side? That is where the sunrise and clouds are.
- Are there warm blankets for winter nights?
- Is there running hot water, and when is power available?
Sunrise at Konglak
Konglak Para, at the far end of the ridge, is the highest point in Sajek and the best place for sunrise. Set off on foot before dawn with a torch, wear shoes with good grip, and take it slowly on the last steep stretch. You will usually find a few others already waiting at the top.
Back in the main village, the helipad is a popular spot for sunset. Both get crowded on busy weekends, so arrive early if you want a quiet place to stand.
Network, power, cash and cold
Sajek is far from towns, and a few practical things catch people out:
- Mobile network is patchy and depends on your operator. Download maps and booking details before you leave Khagrachari, and tell family you may be hard to reach.
- Electricity is limited. Many cottages run on solar or generators for set hours, so carry a charged power bank.
- Cash matters. Do not count on finding an ATM in Sajek; withdraw what you need in Khagrachari.
- Cold nights: even outside winter, early mornings on the ridge can be chilly. Pack a warm layer, and a proper jacket from November to February.
- Rain gear in the monsoon, plus a bag to keep your phone and papers dry in the open jeep.
Sajek is home to Lushai and Tripura families, not a theme park. Keep music low at night, take your plastic back down with you, and ask before photographing anyone.
If you would like the bus, jeep, cottage and timings arranged for you, our Sajek package and the longer Sajek and Khagrachari package cover the trip, and Softway Travels can plan or book it around your dates.
