Which country to apply to, why to book appointments early, and how to prepare insurance, an itinerary, bank papers and proof of ties at home.

A Schengen visa opens most of Europe with a single sticker, from the Swiss Alps to the canals of Amsterdam. For Bangladeshi travellers it is also one of the more demanding applications, and refusals usually come down to preparation rather than bad luck. Start early, build a file that makes sense from first page to last, and you give yourself the best chance.

Apply to the right country

You don't get to choose the embassy you like best. The rule is simple:

  • Apply to the country where you'll spend the most nights.
  • If your nights are split evenly, apply to the country you'll enter first.

Your itinerary, your bookings and the country on your application must all agree. Applying to a country that seems easier while spending most of the trip elsewhere is a common reason for refusal, and it can cause problems at the border too. Not every Schengen country takes applications in Dhaka, so where and how you apply depends on your main destination.

Appointments fill early

Appointment slots, whether at an embassy or a visa application centre, often run out weeks ahead, especially for spring and summer travel. Plenty of trips are lost simply because people waited to finalise hotels before booking the appointment.

Find out the earliest date you can apply for your travel dates, and secure an appointment as soon as your plans are firm. Then prepare your documents around that date, not the other way round.

Book the appointment first, then polish the file. A perfect file without a slot goes nowhere.

The documents usually asked for

Lists differ by country and change over time, but a Schengen tourist file from Bangladesh usually includes:

  1. Passport with enough validity beyond your return and blank pages, plus old passports that show your travel history.
  2. Application form and photos that meet the Schengen specification.
  3. Travel insurance for the whole stay, with medical and repatriation cover that meets the Schengen minimum.
  4. A day-by-day itinerary with flight reservations and hotel bookings for every night.
  5. Bank statements and a solvency certificate for recent months, showing income you can explain.
  6. Proof of ties: an NOC and leave approval from your employer, a trade licence and tax papers if you run a business, or a letter from your institution if you're a student.
  7. A covering letter that explains who you are, why you're travelling, who is paying and when you'll return.

Make the itinerary believable

A clear, realistic plan reassures the officer that you're a genuine tourist. Ten countries in eight days doesn't. Two or three bases connected by train usually reads better, and it makes for a better holiday. If you're thinking of the Swiss mountains, Paris and the Rhine, our guide to seeing Europe by train helps you build a route that's easy to explain.

Hold flight reservations rather than buying non-refundable tickets before the visa is granted, and make sure your hotel bookings cover every night, with names that match your passport.

Show strong ties to Bangladesh

Above everything, the officer needs to be confident you'll come home. That confidence comes from the whole picture: stable work or business, a steady bank history, family responsibilities, property, and past trips where you returned on time.

  • Avoid large, unexplained deposits in the months before you apply.
  • Make sure the salary in your bank statement matches the salary in your NOC.
  • Include previous visas and travel, especially to Europe, the UK, North America or Australia, if you have them.
  • Be honest on every form. A small inconsistency does more harm than a modest profile.

If you've been refused before, keep the refusal letter and address each reason directly. Our note on what to do after a visa refusal explains how to reapply with a stronger file.

Schengen requirements change, and each member country has its own way of doing things. Softway Travels checks the current rules for your destination when you apply through our visa service, reviews your file before submission and books the flights, hotels and insurance to match.
