A Sri Lanka and Maldives honeymoon in one trip
Tea hills and temples first, a quiet island last: how to split the nights, pick a Maldives stay and time a two-country honeymoon from Dhaka.

Some couples want adventure on their honeymoon and some want to do absolutely nothing. Sri Lanka and the Maldives let you have both without a long journey in between. Colombo and Malé are a short flight apart, so you can spend the first part of the trip exploring misty hills and old temples, then finish with your feet in warm, clear water.
Why hills first and island last
The order matters more than people expect. Sri Lanka is the active half: early starts, scenic drives, a train ride, temple visits and plenty of walking. The Maldives is the reward. If you do the island first, the road trip afterwards can feel like hard work. If you save it for the end, you fly home rested rather than worn out.
It also tends to suit the flights. A common routing is Dhaka to Colombo, Colombo to Malé, and Malé back to Dhaka, often with a connection on the way home. Softway Travels can compare the options for your dates and keep the connections sensible.
How to split the nights
There is no single right answer, but these splits work well for most couples:
- 7 nights: 4 in Sri Lanka (Kandy and the hill country) and 3 in the Maldives
- 9 nights: 5 in Sri Lanka, adding a stop near Ella or on the south coast, and 4 in the Maldives
- 11 nights or more: 6 or 7 in Sri Lanka at a slower pace, and 4 or 5 in the Maldives
Try not to go below three nights in the Maldives. The first day goes on transfers and settling in, and the last morning on packing. In Sri Lanka, avoid changing hotels every night. Two nights in each base gives you time to enjoy the place rather than just sleep there.
A simple Sri Lanka loop for couples
Start in Kandy, with the lake, the Temple of the Tooth and the botanical gardens at Peradeniya. Head up into the tea country around Nuwara Eliya, then take the famous train through the hills towards Ella, where you can walk to Little Adam's Peak and see the Nine Arch Bridge. If you have more nights, the old fort at Galle on the south coast is a lovely place to wander at sunset before you fly on.
Choosing your Maldives stay
This is the biggest decision of the trip, and it comes down to two main types of stay.
A resort island is one island, one hotel. You get a private beach, over-water or beach villas, restaurants and usually a house reef for snorkelling. Transfers from Malé are by speedboat, seaplane or a domestic flight plus a boat, depending on how far out the resort is. This is the classic honeymoon picture, and the quietest option.
A local island guesthouse puts you on an inhabited island with Maldivian families, a mosque, small cafés and boat excursions to sandbanks and reefs. It usually costs less and feels more real. But local customs apply: dress modestly in the village, swim in swimwear only on the designated tourist beach, and remember that alcohol is not served on local islands.
For many honeymooners the resort wins, but a few nights on a local island followed by one or two at a resort is a good compromise. We go into more detail in our guide to choosing a local island or a resort.
When to go
Roughly December to April is the most reliable window for this combination. The Maldives is in its drier season, and Sri Lanka's hill country and south-west coast usually have their best weather. From around May to September the south-west monsoon brings more rain to the Maldives and to Sri Lanka's west and south, although Sri Lanka's east coast is in season then. The Maldives stays warm all year, so a wetter-season trip can still be lovely, with showers that come and go.
Wedding season in Bangladesh overlaps with the busiest travel months, so book flights and the Maldives stay as early as you can once your date is fixed.
Visas and small practical things
Sri Lanka usually asks visitors to arrange an electronic travel authorisation before they fly, and the Maldives has generally given visitors a visa on arrival when they hold a confirmed booking and onward ticket. Both systems change from time to time, so Softway Travels checks the current requirements when you book.
- Pack modest clothes covering shoulders and knees for temples, and remember you remove your shoes
- Bring a light jacket for cool evenings in the hill country
- Use reef-safe sunscreen and never stand on coral when snorkelling
- Tell your hotels it is your honeymoon, as some like to mark the occasion
If you would like the whole thing handled in one go, Softway Travels can plan and book a Sri Lanka and Maldives honeymoon with flights, hotels and transfers, or just a Maldives escape on its own.
