Sylhet and Sreemangal: train, road or flight from Dhaka?
How to get from Dhaka to Sylhet and Sreemangal, which town to visit first, how many days to allow and how to beat the weekend and holiday rush.

Sylhet and Sreemangal sit on the same line out of Dhaka, which makes them one of the easiest pairings in the country. One gives you rivers, stone beds and border hills; the other gives you tea gardens, forest and slow mornings. The planning questions are always the same: how to get there, which town first, and how to avoid travelling with half of Dhaka on a long weekend.
Train, road or a short flight
Each option has a clear use, and many people mix them, going one way and coming back another.
- Train: the favourite for good reason. Intercity trains from Dhaka to Sylhet stop at Sreemangal on the way, and the tea gardens start appearing outside the window long before you arrive. There are day trains and a night train, so you can travel while you sleep and wake up in the hills. Seats are comfortable and the journey is part of the holiday.
- Road: a hired car or microbus gives you the most freedom, especially for a family or a group, and lets you stop where you like. Buses also run regularly. The catch is traffic: getting out of Dhaka and through the highway towns can take much longer than you expect, particularly before holidays.
- Flight: Dhaka to Sylhet's Osmani International Airport is a short hop and the quickest way to the far end of the trip. Sreemangal has no commercial airport, so flying works best for the Sylhet leg.
A good combination for a short trip: train to Sreemangal, road to Sylhet, and a flight home from Sylhet.
Which town first?
Because Sreemangal comes first on the line from Dhaka, it usually makes sense to start there. Spend your first days among the tea gardens, then drive on to Sylhet for the rivers and hills, and head home from Sylhet by road, rail or air. This way you never retrace your steps.
If you are flying in, simply reverse it: land in Sylhet, explore, then drive down to Sreemangal and take the train back to Dhaka.
How many days you need
You can rush both towns in a long weekend, but you will spend much of it in vehicles. A more relaxed plan looks like this:
- Day 1: travel to Sreemangal, an evening walk through a tea estate and a cup of the famous layered tea.
- Day 2: Lawachara National Park in the morning, then Madhabpur Lake or more tea gardens.
- Day 3: drive to Sylhet, visit the shrine of Hazrat Shahjalal and settle in.
- Day 4: a full day for Jaflong, Lalakhal, Ratargul or Bisnakandi, depending on the season.
- Day 5: a slow morning and the journey home.
Four nights is the sweet spot for most families. Our Sylhet and Sreemangal package is built around this kind of pace, and our guide to Sylhet's rivers and hills explains which spots suit which season.
Getting around once you arrive
In both towns, the CNG auto-rickshaw is the everyday way around for short trips. It is cheap and easy to find, but agree the fare and the route before you set off. For day trips to Jaflong, Lalakhal or the tea estates, a hired car with a local driver is far more comfortable, keeps your group together and saves you from bargaining at every stop.
Some places, such as Ratargul and Bisnakandi, also involve a local boat for the last stretch, so build that time into your day.
Weekends, Eid and the winter rush
Sylhet and Sreemangal are among the most popular weekend escapes from Dhaka. Thursday evenings, Eid holidays, the winter months and long public holidays bring heavy demand, and that shows up everywhere at once:
- Train tickets on popular trains sell out fast, so book as soon as tickets open for your date.
- The better resorts and tea-garden cottages fill early on weekends; reserve before you fix anything else.
- Roads out of Dhaka are slow on the evening before a holiday. Leave early in the morning if you are driving.
- If your dates are flexible, travel Sunday to Wednesday. It is quieter and calmer everywhere.
If you would like the tickets, transport and stays lined up for you, our Sreemangal package covers the tea country, and Softway Travels can plan or book the full Sylhet and Sreemangal trip around your dates.
